PIPER SNIFFLED AND released his hand, needing to escape his proximity.

Her brain and heart were in too much turmoil to handle him tonight. “No need, Shane. I’m okay.”

A harsh laugh escaped him. “There’s no way I’m letting you go in alone.”

She could continue to argue with him, but it was just wasting her breath. “Okay. Let’s go.”

Rushing from his pickup, she walked up her driveway to the path leading to her front door, Shane hot on her heels. She unlocked the door and as soon as she entered, the unfamiliar beep-beep-beep of the alarm pad warned her she only had 120 seconds before the siren would go off. At the sound of the beeping, Decoy and Chipper came running out to jump all over her legs.

“Sit,” she commanded, and Shane had to repeat the command before the dogs complied.

Hands shaking, she fumbled at first, but then punched in the code Shane and she had set.

The beeping ended and Piper kneeled to rub the dogs’ heads. She scooped up Chipper and the puppy licked her face, making her smile.

But that smile faded as she met Shane’s gaze. It was intense and way too focused on her. “I’ll be fine. You don’t need to worry.”

He nodded. “Just to make sure, I’ll leave Decoy with you. He didn’t do all that well with those attack commands, but he’s still big enough to scare someone off.”

Piper hoped she wouldn’t need to use any attack commands, but just in case...

“Thank you. I’ll take good care of him,” she said and rubbed Decoy’s ears. The dog sidled up to her, happy for the attention. “Good boy.”

“I know you will, but... Take good care of yourself as well. I’ll see you in the morning,” he said and took a step back into the alcove by her front door. He gestured to the alarm pad and said, “Lock up and set that thing.”

“I will,” she said, but delayed, hand on the edge of the door. Saying “thanks” seemed like so little considering all that he’d done for her in the last few days. But anything else would only complicate things even more.

“Thanks,” she said, but quickly added, “We can start training again in the morning.”

Her words lightened his features and a quick smile skipped across his lips. “I’d like that.”

“I would, too,” she said and quickly closed the door.
